Building an LMS for the Indian market is not the same as building for the West. The constraints are different, the expectations are different, and what works in the US often fails in India.
1. UPI is Non-Negotiable
Your students pay via UPI — not credit cards. Razorpay and PayU support UPI natively and are easy to integrate. Skip international payment gateways unless you have global students.
2. WhatsApp is Your LMS Communication Layer
Students don't check email. They check WhatsApp. Your LMS should send enrolment confirmations, new lecture alerts, certificate notifications, and assignment reminders via WhatsApp.
3. Video Must Work on 4G — Not Just Fibre
Adaptive bitrate streaming (Mux, Cloudflare Stream, or AWS MediaConvert + CloudFront) is essential. Students in Tier-2 cities on 4G can't buffer a 1080p video. Design for 480p as the baseline.
4. Protect Your Content from Day One
Signed URLs, screen recording overlays, and download prevention aren't optional — they're expected. Content leaks through WhatsApp groups are the #1 revenue leak for online educators in India.
5. Auto-Generate Certificates
Indian students attach high value to certificates. Auto-generating a branded PDF with a QR verification code on course completion is a feature that directly impacts student satisfaction and word-of-mouth.
